Lions instead of loopings - a look into the review mirror of Planet Zoo
The developers of Frontier Developments have already caused great excitement among fans of construction strategy games with Planet Coaster in 2016. At the beginning of November 2019 they presented their new coup with Planet Zoo, which is understood in many places as a spiritual sequel to the popular Zoo Tycoon. How does the trade press react to the title, which is currently available exclusively for the PC?
GameStar points out that the zoo simulator "immediately evokes memories of carefree childhood" and also praises the authentic conveyance of majesty. The game clearly puts the animals in the foreground - a circumstance that is also positively underlined by the test report of the French colleagues from Millenium: Planet Zoo is full of caring messages and clearly positioning itself for animal-friendly actionism, which is seen as a nice contrast to the capitalist aspect of animal husbandry.
Planet Zoo gameplay
In terms of gameplay, Frontier Developments makes the previously held wish of many users come true to combine the creative freedom of expression given in Planet Coaster with rewarding management elements. GamesRadar also attributes complex depth to the game with satisfying gameplay loops, but is at the same time frustrated by a lack of helpful tutorials and excessive micro-management. Therefore, newcomers to the genre could sometimes feel overwhelmed, but the game rewards the effort invested with a correspondingly engaging experience.
The graphics are praised in various reviews. The lifelike representation of hundreds of animals makes an undeniable charm. But not all of them are welcome - numerous bugs have marred the joy at the release in part. The trade press assumes that Frontier will iron out any technical errors over time and expand the game itself with DLC; JeuxActu criticizes the lack of birds and marine animals in this context, for example. Nevertheless, Planet Zoo is often credited with being the best zoo simulator on the market!
