The US video game manufacturer Activision Blizzard is known for its successful brands such as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft and Overwatch. But now the company itself is in the spotlight: As has now been announced, Activision recorded a hacker attack on an employee account last week.
No access to customer data and game codes
Activision confirmed the incident and stated that no sensitive employee data, game codes or customer data were stolen. However, security researchers report that confidential workplace documents, employee information such as full names, email addresses, telephone numbers, salaries and workplaces, as well as the release plan for future games up to November 17, 2023 were stolen through the attack.
Affected: An employee of the personnel department
The employee whose account was hacked worked in the personnel department and had access to confidential company information. These include plans for the Call of Duty series in 2023, including the next installment with the working title Jupiter. However, the leaked material comes from marketing documents and not from development documents.
No public announcement of the security gap
So far, Activision has not publicly announced the hacker attack, which could raise concerns about the ongoing merger with Microsoft. This security gap could lead to a serious image damage and influence the stock price. It remains to be seen how Activision will respond to the incident.
