The Return of Rome in Age of Empires II
The legend is back! Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is getting a brand-new expansion called Return of Rome, which offers 17 civilizations, 3 new campaigns, a new game mode, and an additional civilization (the Romans) in the base game. Inspired by the "The Rise of Rome" expansion from 1998 for Age of Empires, "Return of Rome" brings both familiar and brand-new content for established and new players.
The expansion is a completely new type of DLC for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition and brings classic Age of Empires gameplay, style, and important player experiences as a standalone experience. So, if you've always wanted to relive the glory of Rome, this is your chance!
What to Expect in Return of Rome
Return of Rome is not just a simple DLC, but a standalone experience that takes players directly back to ancient Rome. To start playing Return of Rome in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, simply select the Return of Rome icon in the main menu. Purchasing Return of Rome also grants access to the bonus Roman civilization when playing in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition mode.
New Civilization, Campaigns, and Game Mode
In Return of Rome, all 16 original Age of Empires civilizations are included, from the Assyrians to the Yamato. Additionally, the Lac Viet civilization joins as the newest ancient civilization. The Lac Viet is a fast-paced archer civilization from ancient Southeast Asia and will be exclusively available for Return of Rome.
There are also 3 brand new campaigns specifically for Return of Rome: Sargon of Akkad (Sumerians), Pyrrhus of Epirus (Macedonians), and Trajan (Romans). With new missions and stories told in the familiar AoE II: DE style, players can experience more historical moments.
The D3 game mode challenges players with a new style of gameplay. D3 is a tribute to a popular rule set that became popular in the Vietnamese Age professional scene and is now fully integrated into the game. This rule reduces rush tactics and allows players to start their early game more robustly by only allowing them to fight with a single unit until they advance to the Bronze Age.
