Dragon Lords in Age of Wonders 4: The Powerful Creatures of Dragon Dawn

Friends of Age of Wonders, it's time to embark on a new adventure! With the upcoming Dragon Dawn DLC, we will have the opportunity to steer the fate of our race as powerful Dragon Lords. In this article, you will learn all about these impressive creatures and their role in the game.

The Different Forms of Dragons

In Age of Wonders 4, there are three main forms of dragons: the young wyverns, the common dragons, and the powerful Elder Dragons. The Elder Dragons were among the first creatures created by the All-Father. Their immense intelligence and mastery of the elements allowed them to assist the Archons in shaping the worlds and creating powerful artifacts. With the opening of the Gates of Athla, these Elder Dragons have returned as Dragon Lords and seek to ascend to the ranks of the Godir.

Creating Dragon Lords: Power and Economy

To play as a Dragon Lord in Age of Wonders 4, you must first create one. It's important to note that these powerful creatures also have economic implications. With a cost of 30 gold per turn, it can be difficult to build new armies early on. But don't worry! The new mechanism of the Dragon Hoard offers the opportunity to passively generate gold-based equipment that your heroes cannot wear. This hoard helps you balance your gold and further expand your dragon power.

Customization Options for Your Dragon

Of course, you also want to be able to customize the appearance of your dragon! Although some characteristics are set (4 legs, 1 head, and 2 wings), you have a wide range of options to customize the appearance of your dragon.

Starting Affinity and Effects

When creating your dragon, you also choose its starting affinity. This has several effects:

  • It grants you a point of that affinity, which is helpful in advancing the empire upgrade tree.
  • It determines the type of damage your dragon's breath weapons cause (e.g. fire for Chaos dragons or poison for Nature dragons).
  • It determines the effect of your dragon's aura, which is later unlocked through the hero skill system.

The Ashen War: A New Adventure Awaits You!

With the Dragon Dawn DLC comes a new world called "The Ashen War". In this world, you will encounter six Elder Dragons divided into two factions. Being friends with members of one faction pleases their allies but angers members of the opposing faction. Each Elder Dragon controls a powerful people, but their true strength lies within themselves and the smaller gifts they grant their heroes. Each of the Elder Dragons represents an affinity and has a unique ability that represents their extraordinary power.

The Presence Realm Feature: The Ashen War

The Ashen War is a Presence Realm feature included in Dragon Dawn that does not require Pantheon advancements to unlock. Face the challenges of the Ashen War and become a Peacemaker, Dawnwarden, or Reshaper as the Dragon Dawn begins.
