The End of Alice: Asylum and American McGee's Departure
Alice: Asylum, the long-awaited third-person psychological horror game and sequel to Alice: Madness Returns, has officially been rejected by EA. With this rejection, game designer American McGee is permanently stepping away from game development. In this article, you'll learn what this means for the dark fantasy series.
EA's Rejection of Alice: Asylum
Despite months of conception and pre-production, EA has decided not to give Alice: Asylum the green light. In a post on American McGee's now inactive Patreon page, he shared that EA rejected the project after an internal analysis. This decision came just weeks after McGee and Mysterious Studios released the Alice: Asylum Design Bible, a document with over 400 pages of original concept art.
American McGee's retirement from game development
In the same Patreon post, American McGee announced that he is retiring from Alice and game design altogether. He explains that he has no further ideas or energy for a new Alice game and even if Alice: Asylum were to go into production, he would have no interest in being involved. Instead, McGee will focus on his family and other areas of the Mysterious business.
The end of the Alice series?
With the rejection of Alice: Asylum by EA and American McGee's retirement, it seems that Alice's journey through her own twisted mind is coming to an end. The rights to the Alice series remain with EA, who apparently have no interest in selling or licensing them. Fans of the darkly beautiful franchise should perhaps look to the upcoming Alice-inspired game Ravenlok or not wait for it at all.
Alice: Madness Returns - A look back
While we must say goodbye to the hope of a sequel, it is still worth taking a look back at Alice: Madness Returns. The game, released in 2011, offered a dark interpretation of Lewis Carroll's classic and took us through Alice's disturbing thoughts. Although there will be no sequel, Alice: Madness Returns remains an unforgettable gaming experience.
Alternative games for fans of the Alice series
Although the production of Alice: Asylum has been cancelled, there are still some alternative games that may interest fans of the series. For example, Ravenlok, an upcoming Alice-inspired game, could be a good alternative. In addition, our Steam Keys page offers many other dark fantasy games that may pique your interest.
