Since the 2018 release, Among Us has been one of the popular party games for PC, smartphones and tablets. Following the later console releases in 2021, another announcement followed: Among Us will also be playable on PlayStation VR in the future.
The meteoric success of Among Us
Inspired by the mechanics of the board games Mafia and Die Werwölfe von Düsterwald, a game titled Among Us was released in 2018 that successfully combined cooperative strategy and detective gameplay. In particular, the game spread rapidly in 2019 and 2020 (during the peak of the early coronavirus crisis) in the sphere of Twitch streamers and YouTubers.
Today, the space-themed Among Us is one of the most popular cooperative deduction games that combine intrigue and cooperation. According to analysts, by November 2020 the title had already attracted 500 million players worldwide. The free-to-play versions also contributed to the success. After the title expanded to consoles such as Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and Nintendo Switch, virtual reality is now also in focus for the gaming experience.
The Gameplay Features
In mid-December 2021, the game's developers announced the title Among Us VR. The port of the 2D player experience into a three-dimensional VR experience is one of the features. Although no specific release date was announced with the announcement, technologies such as PlayStation VR, SteamVR and Meta Quest 2 are said to benefit from the port. In the course of the Game Awards 2021, a first trailer for VR gameplay was released, providing an early look at the 3D representation of Among Us.
It is immediately clear that the game has been completely revised visually to do justice to the VR representation at least visually. At the same time, not the original Among Us developers Innersloth are responsible for the implementation of the game, but Schell Games: a US-American development studio specializing in educational games as well as VR titles.
How does the VR version differ from the classic Among Us?
The key difference between Among Us and the new Among US VR is the 3D representation of the game world. If you have a modern VR headset, you can also go looking for the impostor in first person or spin your virtual intrigues. While the optics are completely adapted to the three-dimensional virtual space, the gameplay should, however, be oriented closely to the original. So also for VR players the traditional Among Us experience is guaranteed. However, there is also a drawback here: the VR version will not be compatible with the classic Among Us. So if you want to play VR in multiplayer with others, you and your fellow players should have the VR version.
Of course, the owners of the VR version will be able to enjoy the classic map The Skeld from the beginning, which was already the first map in the early Among Us.
