Battlefield 2042 - Finally, there's a name and a reveal trailer

With Battlefield 2042, developer Dice has announced the latest installment of the battlefield simulation for October 2021. This time it's set in a dark future where most of the world's nations have become ungovernable due to environmental disasters and a massive refugee crisis has led to tensions between the US and Russia. There will be no classic single-player campaign, but there will be a comprehensive multiplayer mode and matches against bots with plenty of sandbox gameplay, chaos and more destruction than in any previous installment.

In the premise of Battlefield 2042, famines, rising sea levels and severe weather have led to the so-called Fallen Nations. You as a player take on the role of various soldiers whose countries no longer exist and who join the superpowers as mercenaries to support them in their power struggle. There are numerous former nations to choose from, resulting in a great diversity in the choice of your avatar.

Opulent multiplayer action for up to 128 players

The various maps also offer a lot of variety. The largest, Breakaway, is set in Antarctica and is already 6 km² in size, just like Fortnite. The iconic jump from the cliff here revives the legendary moment from Battlefield 3. In the map Kaleidoscope you play in a metropolis rich in skyscrapers. The buildings can be entered and you can travel between them via zip lines.

Other highlights are the maps Hourglass, which is set in Qatar, the map Orbital, where a rocket launch must be defended or prevented, the map Discarded, which features plenty of interactive elements like collapsing walls, and the maps Renewal and Manifest, which offer Devolution elements like tornadoes and other weather phenomena.

A total of 128 players can compete against each other at the same time on Next-Gen and PC, which is the largest number of players in a Battlefield to date. The old consoles can bring 64 players to the map. The developers promise a future with technologically advanced weapons and gadgets, but want to keep everything "grounded on reality".

This means that every weapon you can choose in the game exists in reality at least as a prototype or concept drawing. In addition, there will be a robot dog as well as self-propelled, armed drones, gun towers, helicopters and jets. The class system of the previous parts was roughly adopted.

So there are again Engineers, Supporters and other familiar classes, but in addition every player can use specialist skills. These are characterized by unique gadgets that can be used in combat.

The Battlefield main series at a glance:

  • Battlefield 1942 (2002)
  • Battlefield 2 (2005)
  • Battlefield 3 (2011)
  • Battlefield 4 (2013)
  • Battlefield 5 (2018)
  • Battlefield 2042 (2021)

Battlefield 2042, the sixth part of the main series, will offer more interactive elements and a more free-spirited gameplay than the parts before. The maps will be able to change sustainably, which will lead to different strategic considerations and gadgets like the Wingsuit will allow you to interact more intensively with your environment. In addition to well-known weapons, such as the Carl Gustaf rocket launcher, there will be many new war machines on extremely large and complex battlefields.

As a fan of the Battlefield series, 2042 offers you the core gameplay of parts 3 and 4, freed from the baggage of a linear singleplayer campaign and expanded with chaos-inducing and dynamic Levolution elements. If you like gigantic, action-packed multiplayer battles and realistic state-of-the-art graphics, then Battlefield 2042 is the right game for you.
