Medieval MMO Gloria Victis closes its doors
Who would have thought? After six years in early access on Steam, Gloria Victis, the medieval MMO that took us on a journey to a long-forgotten era, has announced its end. The development company, Black Eye Games, will also be closing its doors.
Why this abrupt farewell?
The main reason for this drastic decision, according to the developers, is primarily financial difficulties. But not only that - the work of keeping the game running and continuing to grow has taken a toll on the team and ultimately led to burnout.
Gloria Victis: A Retrospective
Despite a failed Kickstarter attempt in 2012 and six years in early access on Steam, Gloria Victis was finally fully released in January 2023. The support of the community and kind souls from the Polish gaming industry helped the team overcome all obstacles.
A Difficult Decision
After countless considerations, the team had to make the toughest decision. "Our game has always been a niche that we could expand extremely difficultly without losing the game's identity and requiring more and more resources," said the Gloria Victis team. The continuous work without the necessary rest ultimately led to burnout.
The End for Gloria Victis
Unfortunately, the new season will be the last in Gloria Victis. And to be honest, Gloria Victis didn't have many players: According to Steam Charts, it had a peak of 4,175 concurrent players shortly after the full release, but that quickly dropped to less than 700 in the last 30 days.
Farewell to Black Eye Games
It's also a farewell for Black Eye Games. In addition to Gloria Victis, the studio was also responsible for Siege Survival: Gloria Victis and Nadir: A Grimdark Deckbuilder. Nevertheless, the studio confirmed that it will be closing down along with the Gloria Victis MMO.
The Final Act
"We will do everything in our power to support our team," said the studio. That sounds like a bittersweet farewell, but also the beginning of something new for the developers of Gloria Victis. Who knows, maybe we'll see them in new roles soon!
