In 2019, Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment scored a real hit with Control, a mix of third-person action, quirky atmosphere, and a series of mysterious secrets. The strictly secret US agency Federal Bureau of Control (FBC) is responsible in the Control universe for investigating supernatural and physically inexplicable phenomena.
In the role of the new director Jesse Faden, you have to defend the FBC headquarters, the so-called Oldest House, against a dark power. You roam through the floors of the huge building - one stranger than the other. Metroidvania-style level design, architecture inspired by brutalism, and a destructible environment impressed players and critics alike.
In AWE, Control meets Alan Wake
In March and June 2020, Remedy Entertainment released an expansion for Control called The Foundation. In this, you can explore a previously closed-off part of the Oldest House. Remedy Entertainment is now doing the same with the second expansion, titled AWE (Altered World Event). In AWE, there are new secrets to be uncovered in the previously closed-off Investigations Sector.
But this time there's a twist: as Jesse Faden, you're guided by the voice of Alan Wake, the protagonist of an earlier game by Remedy Entertainment, and you meet the main antagonist of Alan Wake, the evil Dr. Emil Hartman. However, he appears to you in a scary mutated form in Control: AWE.
The action adventure Alan Wake convinced at the time of its release in May 2010 with a very similar mix as Control. However, Alan Wake had more horror elements and was therefore even darker. This is exactly the direction Control: AWE is going. In addition to the eerie atmosphere, there are also a number of references to the events from Alan Wake.
This is particularly recommended for die-hard fans. But newcomers who particularly liked the scarier elements of Control and who would like to dive deeper into the horror genre will also get their money's worth.
An impressive list of creative games
Remedy Entertainment can look back on almost two decades of experimental action adventure games with the release of Control: AWE. The studio made a name for itself as early as 2001 with the action classic Max Payne. After Alan Wake, the spiritual successor Quantum Break followed in 2016. The game is known for a mix of video game and live action TV series.
