Crucible Release - The first Amazon Game - is it any good?

The videogame Crucible is a multiplayer action-shooter, in which players choose a hero and then compete in teams in large arenas. You have a choice of three different game modes. Namely, these are the core of the swarms, alpha hunters and harvesting machine command. Here, two to eight teams then compete against each other and try to achieve their mission goal. Here you control one of the ten available heroes from the shoulder perspective and use all kinds of weapons to defeat the opponents. These range from close combat weapons to sniper rifles.

Crucible - Amazon Games' first release

With the release of Crucible, Amazon makes a first statement on the gaming market. This is the first video game of the company, whose orientation is clear. So Crucible offers in its gameplay a mixture of MOBA game and hero shooter and thus occupies a niche that is absolutely mass-compatible. Fans of ego shooters will continue to appreciate the direct control of the weapons. Fans of League of Legends and similar titles will also find their way around, as Crucible also has to hold tactical key points and experience points have to be farmed. In addition, there are the technical requirements for the hardware, which are in a range that should not be a problem for most players. These are the minimum requirements as specified by Amazon:

  • Operating system: Windows 7 64-bit
  • Processor: AMD FX-6300 or Intel i5-3570
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 7850 or GTX 660 (both in 2GB version)
  • Storage: 15 GB of available storage

Release problems with Crucible

However, a lot went wrong with the actual release. The servers were overloaded, which meant that many players could not access the game at launch. Accordingly, the reaction of the player base was also negative, with Crucible starting with negative reviews on Steam for the delay. However, a look at the initial player numbers still suggests that Crucible has the potential to gather a player community in the long term. So on the first day over 20,000 users played the title, which can be seen as a solid basic interest.

Crucible thus creates neither new in terms of setting nor gameplay. The fact that it is free to play, presents familiar game formats appealingly and does not require high system requirements is likely to result in a growing fan base.

The Future of Amazon Games

This speaks to Crucible Multiplayer players who are shy of Hardcore shooters and at the same time like to act tactically with their team. It remains to be seen to what extent Crucible is suitable for e-sports or whether it remains a casual game.

It will also be interesting to see how Amazon reacts to this first success and whether the company wants to appear as a game developer in the long term with Amazon Games. The MMO New World is already planned for release in August 2020.
