Cryptmaster: A Dungeon Crawler with a Twist
Hey gamers! Have you heard of Cryptmaster yet? It's an old-school dungeon crawler that combines word puzzles with party-based RPG battles. Imagine exploring creepy dungeons while solving word riddles. Sounds like your kind of thing? Then keep reading.
What to Expect in Cryptmaster
At the start of the game, you are resurrected by a mysterious dungeon master, the titular Cryptmaster. This indie hit combines elements from adventure games, word puzzles, and dungeon-crawling RPGs. And the best part? You can now try it out in a free demo on Steam.
How does Cryptmaster work?
The gameplay of Cryptmaster is quite unique. Your movement is controlled by the arrow keys, similar to classic dungeon crawlers. However, almost everything else you do in the game is handled through typing. You type 'Chest' to open chests or 'Jump' to leap over pits. Sounds simple? Wait until you see how the battles play out!
The battles in Cryptmaster
In combat, the moves of your four-member party are executed through typing - 'Hit', 'Boot', 'Jab', 'Soothe', and so on. But there's a catch: to unlock these moves, you have to discover them by typing them for the first time.
The puzzles in Cryptmaster
In the game, you'll often be asked to guess what mysterious objects are inside the chests and crates you open. You get a few chances to ask the Cryptmaster how the item looks or smells. If you guess correctly, the letters of the item will start filling in the empty names in your party spellbook.
Wordplay and humor
Cryptmaster is reminiscent of the classic zombie wordplay game Typing of the Dead and is filled with wordplay and humor. The game doesn't always have an answer to your more peculiar suggestions, but it covers a fairly wide range and even has witty responses for some things that are obviously not the 'right' answer.
Free demo on Steam
Curious? Cryptmaster is set to release in 2024, but you can already download and play the free demo on Steam. So if you feel like exploring some dungeons and expanding your vocabulary along the way, you should definitely give Cryptmaster a try.
