DayZ is a post-apocalyptic zombie survival game in a completely open game world. DayZ completely dispenses with a campaign, story and mission objectives. Instead, the game simply revolves around the fight for survival against zombies and other players. You loot, sneak and shoot your way through a 225 km² large area. If you make too much noise, you will attract the attention of countless undead and will be quickly overrun. Quiet and careful action is required. The human players are just as dangerous. You are free to communicate with them and form a team. You can also betray them or seek confrontation from the beginning to seize their belongings.
At the end of April 2020, it was announced that the studio behind DayZ had closed. Nevertheless, the development of the game is to continue. First, rumors circulated on Reddit. An alleged former employee of the Bratislava studio shared in his Reddit post that the studio would discontinue support for DayZ. Due to lack of evidence, the moderators quickly locked the post. Eventually it turned out that the post was partly true. Bohemia Interactive actually closed the Bratislava studio. However, Bohemia Interactive also announced that it would continue to support the game. In a blog post, the developer went into some features that should be improved in the future. These include an improvement of the base building and the disease system. In addition, the stability of the servers and the overall performance of the game are to be optimized, the mod support improved and new content produced. At the end of 2019, the first major update was released with the new DLC map Livonia. Although the DLC map was chargeable, the reactions to the new content were mostly positive. The map originally came from Arma 3 and was only slightly changed. Criticism that the content update was not free was also expressed in the Steam reviews, but DayZ still received mostly positive reviews. Up to then, DayZ had only played in the fictional city of Chernarus, which came from Arma 2. Chernarus is supposed to resemble a region in northwest Czech Republic, Livonia a Polish region. The release of the DLC brought with it a content update that was also enjoyed by pure Chernarus players. Brown bears were introduced as wild animals and new food options.
DayZ was originally a mod for Arma 2 from 2012. The mod was so successful that Bohemia Interactive began developing it as a standalone game. The alpha version was released as early access on December 16, 2013. Within the first month, the game was downloaded over a million times on Steam. The game was in development for five years. The beta phase ended in late 2017, and the final release was in late 2018.
DayZ should interest those who like open-world multiplayer games and survival horror. If you just want to shoot, you're not in the right place, because ammunition is rare and the noise only attracts more zombies. The thrill is in the fight for survival and in the uncertainty of whether the human players are friends or enemies.
The developer Bohemia Interactive is still known for the Arma series. The military simulations rely on teamwork and realism. Apart from the Arma games and DayZ, the developer's other titles are less well known. These include sandbox games like Ylands, more simulators like Take on Mars, or adventures like The Mystery of Janatris.
