Trouble in paradise? It seems that way at Bungie, the developer of Destiny 2. According to a report by IGN's Rebekah Valentine, "soul-crushing" moral issues are just the tip of the iceberg. There may be even more intense developments lurking beneath the surface.
In early 2022, Sony acquired Bungie for a mere $3.6 billion. While the company continues to operate as an independent subsidiary, Sony holds a powerful trump card: the ability to dissolve the current board and take direct control of the company if certain financial goals are not met.
Possible Scenarios: The Best, the Middle, and the Worst
If Sony takes the reins, several scenarios could unfold:
- The best scenario: Sony removes problematic executives and promotes individuals within the company who make better decisions. Alternatively, they bring in their own talented employees or others with experience in live-service/AAA segments. In this case, it could be exactly what Bungie and Destiny 2 need.
- The middle scenario: A scaling down might be in order. This could involve both a reduction in what Destiny becomes and literal downsizing at Bungie, unfortunately resulting in further layoffs. In this scenario, Destiny simply may not be able to continue at this pace and scope without a significant increase in revenue or players.
- The worst scenario: Sony loses confidence in Bungie's projects from Destiny to Marathon and fears they are burning more money than they are bringing in. In this case, it would be the end of Bungie.
Whatever happens, we all hope that there are no further layoffs and that the oppressive atmosphere there improves. How much time Bungie has left is unclear, but it could end with The Final Shape, and then we will see where the journey goes.
The Ball is in Sony and Bungie's Court
It remains to be seen which direction Sony will take. However, one thing is certain: the Destiny community will be closely watching the developments. After all, the fate of their beloved game depends on it. So let's remain optimistic that Sony and Bungie will find the right path - for the company, for the game, and above all, for the players.
