E-Sports Boom - Is an end of growth in sight?

E-Sports is becoming more and more popular. Even this year, the industry is seeing new record sales. More and more people are watching video game action from the comfort of their own homes or in huge stadiums, cheering on their favorite teams. One thing is clear: E-Sports is no longer a fringe activity, but has firmly established itself in society.

This is unlikely to change anytime soon. On the contrary: E-Sports will continue to grow in importance. The reason for this is quite simple.

Rising Viewership Numbers

One of the main reasons why e-sports is becoming more and more popular are the rising viewership numbers. Already, every fifth German has watched an e-sports match. In 2017, it was only 3 percent, but in 2018 already 14 percent watched a game – and the trend is rising.

This growth can be seen particularly well on the large streaming platforms. That's where the biggest e-sports tournaments are broadcast. Whether it's CS:GO, League of Legends, or Dota 2, from year to year the platforms are seeing more and more viewers from all over the world following the championships of these well-known e-sports games.

This is partly due to the fact that the market for computer and video games is growing all the time. In Germany alone, the revenue from sales of games, subscriptions and hardware last year was more than 6 billion euros. More and more people are buying computers, consoles, video games and digital content.

Increasing Popularity

As the number of viewers and players increases, so does the popularity of the sport. The term "e-sports" is now familiar to more than 45 million Germans. 28 percent have already heard of the sport, and 37 percent know exactly what e-sports is.

Even in the world of sports betting, e-sports is making its way, so people who don't even play video games are coming into contact with the sport. One of the largest betting providers is a good example of this. You can bet on e-sports with Betway Sports Betting, ranging from Dota 2 and League of Legends to the classic Counter Strike: Global Offensive. So in the future it will probably become more and more normal to come into contact with e-sports outside of your own computer.

E-sports becomes a mass sport

Another peculiarity is that the sport appeals to almost every age group and educational background. Just like football, e-sports also unites society, regardless of age, culture or social status.

Whether it's a grammar school, a secondary modern or a comprehensive school, every student plays computer games. E-sports has also arrived in the adult world. Although the majority of gamers are younger than 30, the older generation is gradually finding its way to video games and e-sports.

As the number of players increases, so do the number of communities, groups and clubs. More than 10 million gamers can imagine getting involved in such a club. 21 percent of them would like to take part in competitions themselves. 9 percent have already done so.

Conclusion: the e-sports boom

There is no doubt that the e-sports industry will continue to grow in the future. With the increasing number of players and the growing popularity, the sport will play an even bigger role in our everyday lives in the future. We are therefore looking forward to the further development of e-sports with great interest.
