Epic Games Store - Self-publishing with new rules

The Epic Games Store has made a significant change. From now on, there is a self-publishing option for developers, allowing anyone to submit and publish a game in the Epic Games Store library for a fee of $100. This is a major step for the platform, which previously only released selected games through exclusive agreements. But what is behind this change?

More freedom for developers

The new rules of the Epic Games Store are more open than those of Steam. Developers have more freedom to design their games according to their own vision, and there are no restrictions on blockchain games. The platform also allows developers to use their own payment systems to conduct in-game transactions, instead of using the in-house Epic Games Wallet, as is the case with Steam.

Two rules developers must follow

However, there are also two rules that developers must follow. The first rule states that the Epic Games Store will not allow pornography on its platform, unlike Steam, which has allowed erotic games since 2018. For many developers, however, this could be an advantage. The second, rather unusual rule states that developers who create a multiplayer game for the platform must ensure that it is possible for all players, regardless of where they purchased the game, to play with each other.

Special requirements for multiplayer games

The Epic Games Store provides the Epic Online Services, a free solution for cross-platform multiplayer gaming, to meet these requirements. Valve does not offer a similar solution. Epic Games Store GM Steve Allison criticized Valve for its Steamworks, which optimizes games only for Steam and makes them unusable for other platforms.

Strict developer guidelines

The Epic Games Store will also introduce developer guidelines for the quality and functionality of each game. Allison stated that each game will be tested for 20 minutes to ensure that it works as described. In the past, Steam users have repeatedly complained about games not functioning as they should. The Epic Games Store will also avoid so-called "asset-flipping."

Competition between Epic Games Store and Steam

The Epic Games Store has also announced that it will continue its free game program until 2023 and improve the platform through performance enhancements. Overall, the opening up for self-publishing will enable the platform to better compete with Steam and significantly expand its collection.
