Jason Blum, producer of films like M3gan and The Purge, is looking to get into the video game business. His company Blumhouse Productions plans to develop immersive horror games that can be played on PCs and game consoles.
Blum intends to fund promising titles from smaller studios, help with the creative implementation, and leverage his own reputation in the horror genre. He is being supported by Zach Wood, who has worked on over 30 games, and Don Sechler, a veteran of Sony PlayStation, who will be responsible for the finance and operations.
Blum wants to increase his spending on films, TV shows, and video game productions, and is also exploring new business areas such as live experiences and a bigger presence in amusement parks. The global video game market is larger than the film and music industries combined.
Blum plans to invest in about 15 games in the next three to four years and spend around 25 million dollars per portfolio. However, success in the video game industry is uncertain and the development time for games often takes several months to years. Blum does not plan to produce games based on his own films, but instead wants to rely on an established network of creatives and produce the games on a budget.
