Forgive Me Father 2: A New Era for Boomer Shooters
Classics of boomer shooters like Doom, Quake, and Blood find new life in Forgive Me Father 2. Here, the style of Dishonored is combined with UE5 to create a brutal Gamescom exclusive game.
Doom is iconic for thousands of reasons. From the bloody and metallic level design to the extensive and amazing arsenal of weapons, to the always fun demons, it's clear why Doom remains the biggest and most influential of all classic FPS games. But one thing stands out in particular - the speed. Other shooters may be fast and require a lot of movement, but rarely are they "Doom fast," finding that sweet spot between ballet-like movement and constant bullet-offensive.
Enter Forgive Me Father 2
Enter Forgive Me Father 2, a new boomer shooter developed in Unreal Engine 5 that combines the Lovecraftian world and special abilities of Dishonored with Doom's perfect blend of dance and destruction. Blood, Quake, Half-Life, and other 90s monoliths are strongly represented here, but there are also echoes of Borderlands, BioShock, and XIII. This is an FPS for FPS enthusiasts in every way.
The original game Forgive Me Father was released in 2022 by Byte Barrel and allowed you to annihilate waves of cosmic horror enemies in a linear world à la Innsmouth, playing as either 'The Journalist' or 'The Priest'. With the sequel, many things change. Between each level, you return to a small hub where you can customize loadouts and abilities and chat with a few fan-favorite characters. The narrative branches out, and there are multiple endings. Although it is a boomer shooter at heart, Forgive Me Father 2 is still an ultra-modern FPS based on the latest version of Unreal.
The Advantages of UE5
"UE5 allows us to create better games more easily," says Byte Barrel CEO Ernest Krystian to PCGamesN. "Sometimes it might be too big! Some developers might choose other engines because of that. But for us, it fits perfectly. We started development on Unity but switched to Unreal because it gives us more possibilities to make great games."
Striking Aesthetics
This is partly responsible for the good looks of Forgive Me Father 2. It's fluid. It's sharp. It's full of dynamic and atmospheric lighting effects. But the key really lies in Byte Barrel's excellent visual design.

"A boomer shooter has to touch your heart and evoke memories from your childhood," Krystian continues. "Some things just need to be done. A great shotgun, for example."
The Role of Mental Health
As with any Lovecraftian story, mental health also plays a role in Forgive Me Father 2: The more chaos you cause and the more bloodshed you witness, the higher you drive up your 'Madness' meter.
Anticipation for the Release
Forgive Me Father 2 will be available on Steam Early Access before the end of 2023, but Byte Barrel has not yet set a specific date.
