Forza Motorsport: the revolution of the racing game genre?

Traditionally, the Forza Motorsport series has been one of the in-house titles with which Xbox Game Studios would like to explore the technical possibilities of a new Xbox console. So it came as no surprise to few that Forza Motorsport was one of the first titles announced at the big Games Showcase for the Xbox Series X.

As usual, the development is the responsibility of the Redmond-based development studio Turn 10. The stars are currently still in the dark about when the new racing game will actually be released. Since it was said in June 2020 that development was still at an early stage, it is probably safe to say that fans should not expect Forza Motorsport before the end of 2021. The release may even not occur until 2022.

While Turn 10 is still silent on the release window, despite the early stage of development, first details of the goals pursued by the developers have already been mentioned. After the Forza Motorsport franchise stagnated a bit at a high level recently, game director Dan Greenawalt formulated the ambitious goal in an interview to revolutionize the genre of racing games and to secure the pole position of the racing genre with Forza Motorsport.

To achieve this goal, Greenawalt says Turn 10 makes heavy use of the technical capabilities of the new Xbox- or hardware generation. For example, the internal Forzatech engine is tailored to a native 4K resolution at 60 frames per second and active ray tracing. Thanks to the new engine, Turn 10 will be able to display vehicles and accidents in previously unprecedented quality. Revisions of the engine, by the way, from which the Forza Horizon series from Playground Games will also benefit.

In order to provide the most authentic gaming experience, the familiar Drivatars from the predecessors will also be revised in the new Forza Motorsport. Here, a neural AI network will supposedly ensure that the behavior of the players can be processed more accurately and transferred to the global Drivatars. Since the atmosphere of a racing game is to a not inconsiderable extent determined by its soundscape, this area will also be improved.

An important part of the audio upgrade is the so-called "folding hall", which is essentially a kind of ray tracing for sounds, with which a dynamic and realistic sound simulation can be created. Since the Xbox Series X and modern PC components have a dedicated audio hardware, this does not put a strain on the CPU and, according to the developers, delivers an impressive physics-based sound.

Forza Motorsport is in development for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
