The 11 Bit Studios' 2018 survival strategy hit Frostpunk gained international attention. The logical consequence is the release of the sequel Frostpunk 2, which builds on the gameplay of the predecessor. The predecessor already managed to score points with the charm of an indie title. Frostpunk 2 takes the players back to the Ice Age in a narrative sense, with oil playing an important role.
The special mix of city-building strategy and a survival setting in a game world plagued by an ice age made Frostpunk 2018 a real indie hit. Already on the first three days, the first part sold over 250,000 times, making it a total of over three million times over the virtual counter. The game thus acquired international visibility. The world of Frostpunk takes place in an alternate history in which the world of the 19th century is plagued by a merciless ice age. The basic principle of Frostpunk is also taken up in the sequel: As a strategist in a bird's-eye view, a settlement has to be managed that has to face the challenges of the bitter cold.
In a future with oil
The second part is set 30 years after the snowstorm, with the central resource of coal being supplemented by oil. The game takes a look at an alternative industrialization in a frozen world. The survival of society is in the foreground. In addition, the game wants to be more than just an addition to the predecessor. So, according to Frostpunk 2 co-director Jakub Stokalski, the team behind the game was significantly increased - the scope and quality of Frostpunk 2 should clearly exceed the predecessor. One of the important topics of Frostpunk 2 is the confrontation of man with nature.
So the player has to manage different camps that have different ideas. Does he rule with an iron fist or does he try to unite society? The 11 Bit Studios are trying to integrate a complex mix of game elements into the sequel of Frostpunk. With the announcement in August 2021, no official release date has been announced yet.
