Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) - Will it be released on PC?
Grand Theft Auto 6 now has a release window, but only for some. In a press release for the initial announcement, Rockstar leaves out two very important letters. "Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to PlayStation 5 computer entertainment systems and Xbox Series X|S game and entertainment systems in 2025," the studio announces. But what about the PC?
I don't think it's even a question whether a PC version will be released. GTA 5 is currently the sixth most played game on Steam by concurrent players. It appears twice on Steam's global top sellers list - once for the standard version and once for the premium edition. It's a huge success that has earned Rockstar a lot of money - not least through microtransactions in its online mode.
When will GTA 6 be released on PC?
So the question is more about 'when', and the bad news is that the answer is very unlikely to be 2025.
Let's look at the history
Grand Theft Auto 5 was released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013. The following year, in November 2014, it was released on PS4 and Xbox One. The PC version didn't arrive until April 2015 - a whole 19 months after the console debut. Rockstar's other big release of the decade, Red Dead Redemption 2, was a bit more forgiving. The console version was released in October 2018, and the PC version arrived 'only' 13 months later, in November 2019.
Realistically, we can assume that GTA 6 will come to PC either in 2026 or 2027. Personally, I'm betting on the former. The chances are good that the console release of GTA 6 will be in the early months of 2025 - at least if we believe Take-Two's statement to investors.
When exactly could GTA 6 be released for PC?
If that's the case, then both previous major Rockstar releases would suggest a PC release date in 2026. The 13-month wait for Red Dead Redemption 2 would put us in April 2026. But even the 19-month delay for GTA 5 would lead to a release in October 2026.
While the wait will be long and painful, I can't imagine it dragging on until 2027. And hey, when it finally does arrive, it will likely come with a range of exciting technological tricks that ensure the PC version is the best version you can buy.
