Hellbound - A detour into the shooter world of the nineties

With Hellbound, the indie developers of Saibot Studios are taking a trip back to the classic era of the FPS genre. Interested players can find their cheap key on Keyfuchs.

One thing upfront: Those expecting a branching singleplayer campaign, varied multiplayer modes and an excitingly staged story will be completely wrong with Hellbound. From the very beginning, the developers at Saibot Studios had the goal of releasing Hellbound as a tough first-person shooter that would transport us back to the blissful days of the first 3D shooters such as Doom, Hexen or Wolfenstein.

The plot is correspondingly thin. You slip into the role of the protagonist Hellgore, whose unmistakable voice is lent by voice actor Artie Widgery. Other acoustic highlights of Hellbound include the whipping metal soundtrack, which quickly reminds one of genre classic Doom and drives the action on the screen in an atmospheric way. The soundtrack was composed by the well-known composer David Levill, who collaborated with various guest artists such as Federico Ágreda "Zardonic" or Christian Fernando Perucchi.

In terms of gameplay, Hellbound focuses on the same fare that made Doom and Co. great in the nineties. Since Hellgore wants to take revenge on the demons who massacred his people, he goes about it in a rabies way and uses an arsenal of rusty metals, bones and burnt flesh to send his opponents back to hell. In addition to the rock-solid soundtrack and the powerful boom, of course, the iconic strafe-jumps that distinguished the shooters of the nineties must not be missing.

The firefights of Hellbound are deliberately modeled after legendary shooter classics such as Duke Nukem 3D, Quake or Doom and promise fast non-stop action, which is only interrupted by smaller interactions such as opening doors or exploring hidden areas. However, since Hellbound focuses on the essentials and only offers seven missions and a gripping final boss, you should be aware that the fun is over after just a few hours.

The old-school shooter also cannot compete with modern genre colleagues in terms of scope due to the lack of multiplayer.
