Hello Neighbor 2 expands on the concept of the original game - a child hears screams coming from the house next door, breaks in to investigate, and then has to avoid the angry neighbor. It flees outside to the town of Raven Brooks, a small, quiet place where, for some reason, there is a flood of murders and mysterious disappearances. The whole place feels eerie and so you, as a wise, concerned citizen, decide that it is best to investigate - that is, follow people and break into their houses to see what they are up to.
New from the Neighborhood
In the first Hello Neighbor, it was relatively easy to break into houses - whether by climbing through windows or simply through the front door. In Hello Neighbor 2, however, you have a number of tools at your disposal, including a grappling hook, a rope, and even a fire extinguisher, with which you can walk over structures and other sides of buildings. Some of them have open entrances that go beyond the traditional access routes.
Hello Neighbor!
Despite the negative criticism of the original Hello Neighbor, the title has a thriving community and developer Eerie Guest doubles down on supporting that community by implementing their gameplay style in Hello Neighbor 2 through AI. With a new system called "AI-Neural Network," NPCs learn the behavior patterns of all players by collecting data and require you to be more varied in your decisions.
The AI is not only smarter, but also makes NPCs more adaptable as they are able to analyze what is the best course of action in any given situation. This can mean they find a way through a metal gate they are trapped in, or that they use a cooler as a makeshift wheel after you remove a tire from their car. These types of decisions are not always effective, but the creativity on display here is quite impressive.
An important way to take advantage of being on enemy territory is to impose temporary status effects. These are a new feature in Hello Neighbor 2. Depending on whether your pursuer is dirty, wet, or cold, their status effect interrupts their routine until they fix it. They might, for example, take a shower or warm up near a heater. This not only gives you an open window of opportunity, but can also lead them to unintentionally give you access to important items you can use to progress in a house.
Developer Eerie Guest seems to be aware of the necessary quality of life improvements that were lacking in the first game. And so far the developer studio has announced the right things to make Hello Neighbor 2 even creepier and more fun than ever before.
