HITMAN 3 - The end of the trilogy and the series?

The developers of the successful stealth shooter Hitman presented Hitman 3 in January 2021 as a final continuation of the World of Assassination trilogy. The traditional game series can be traced back to 2000, since then - including Hitman 3 - eight games of the main series have been released. Since the beginning, the franchise has been characterized by challenging stealth action with strategic elements. The player embodies an assassin named Agent 47. Hitman 3 is the conclusion of the World of Assassination trilogy.

The release for Hitman 3 is planned for January 20, 2021 worldwide. The title will appear on established platforms such as PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X. Versions for Stadia and Nintendo Switch are also in the works. Hitman 3 is not the third part of the entire Hitman series, but merely the so-called World of Assassination trilogy, which began in 2016 with the title Hitman. The 2016 soft reboot was loosely based on the predecessors, but focused on more freedom of action and offered exotic locations such as Sapienza and Hokkaido with maps.

Hitman 2 continued the success story in 2018, allowing owners of the predecessor to also play missions from the original Hitman (2016) in the second part. The same feature is also expected in Hitman 3: So owners of the previous parts can enjoy classic levels of the World of Assassination trilogy in the new Hitman. The popular Elusive Targets - time-limited missions - and the creative Contracts Mode are also making a comeback.

The new Hitman can not only be played in 4K and/or 60 FPS with the appropriate hardware; as new content there are scenarios like Dubai and the British Dartmoor. In addition to the standard edition, players can also buy a deluxe edition, which includes pre-order bonuses as well as exclusive suits and so-called deluxe escalations. Owners of a PS4 and Xbox One will receive a free next gen upgrade, so they can enjoy the game they bought on PS5 or Xbox Series X. Hitman 3 is supposed to conclude the World of Assassination trilogy, which thus finds its provisional end. While it is unclear how the Hitman series will continue, Hitman (2016), Hitman 2 and Hitman 3 are supposed to form a closed trilogy.

Hitman stands for stealthy action with strategic claim and thus takes up an exotic position among the shooters. The series by IO Interactive is thus aimed at a different target group than established action or multiplayer shooters. Unlike fast shooters like Call of Duty or Doom, patience plays an important role here: Only those who plan their routes precisely will be rewarded in the long term. This makes Hitman 3 not only attractive to shooter fans, but also to friends of sophisticated strategy.

The Hitman series is closely linked to the history of the Danish studio IO Interactive. The first game of the studio was called Hitman: Codename 47 in the year 2000. Not only the first part, but also most of the sequels of Hitman were due to IO Interactive - including Hitman 2: Silent Assassin (2002), Hitman: Blood Money (2006) and Hitman: Absolution (2012).
