Marathon: A New Gaming Experience from the Developers of Halo and Destiny
Bungie, the developers behind the popular franchises Halo and Destiny, have announced Marathon, a brand-new PVP extraction shooter. The game is set to build upon the proven concepts of Halo and Destiny, but offers a fresh approach with intense gunfights and fast-paced movement.
As a player, you take on the role of a "Runner" who explores hostile worlds in search of artifacts, implants, and most importantly, weapons. Your goal is to strengthen your character and compete against other players in action-packed battles.
PVP Focus with Dedicated Servers
For Marathon, Bungie is putting a clear focus on PVP (Player versus Player). That's why the company is investing in dedicated servers as well as features like separation recovery and fog of war. The game world is described as vibrant and dangerous - there are persistent zones that you can enter. And while the focus is clearly on PVP, Bungie has also announced PvE (Player versus Environment) elements.
As part of the game, you will be part of an evolving story that progresses with each season. There are many opportunities for you to become famous or infamous: Have you helped other players? Were you the first to enter a new zone or discover a special item? Or are you simply the deadliest runner on the battlefield?
Crossplay, Cross-Save, and Next-Gen Graphics
But that's not all! Marathon will also be released on Xbox Series X/S and PC. That means real next-gen gaming with crossplay and cross-save! The developers describe the gameplay as "graphic realism" - bold, colorful, stylized - in a vibrant, beautiful, but also strange world.
Bungie has also announced that they are almost at alpha test level. They will now go "dark" for a while and focus intensively on the game's development. But don't worry: Next time, they will show us the game closer to the release date!
An Homage to the Original?
If the name Marathon sounds familiar to you - you're right! Marathon was actually a first-person shooter by Bungie released in 1994. Whether the new game will be an homage to the original or simply carry the same name remains to be seen.
It is still unclear whether the game will be free or paid. But one thing is for sure: We can't wait to learn more about Marathon!
