After Firaxis' developers focused on their own XCOM and Civilization brands in recent years, the US studio is now taking creative new steps with Marvel's Midnight Suns. As the name of the title suggests, Firaxis Games is taking a detour into the popular Marvel universe this time. In terms of gameplay, however, the developers remain true to their strengths and promise another round of complex strategy skirmishes.
You take on the role of the new character Hunter, who can be freely designed before your adventure begins. Hunter is tasked with gathering superheroes and putting an end to the demon queen Lilith in Marvel's Midnight Suns. His task is made more difficult by the fact that Lilith is his biological mother. Accordingly, the heroes are skeptical of Hunter and his plans.
Be the coolest hero on the battlefield
However, don't expect a 1:1 copy of the classic XCOM mechanics in Marvel's Midnight Suns. Instead, according to the creative minds at Firaxis, it was all about replicating the spectacular fights of the Marvel Universe. Gradually, Hunter learns powerful new attacks that, according to the developers, make you feel "like the coolest hero on the battlefield".
Other new features compared to the XCOM series include the fact that this time the permadeath feature is omitted. Or, in other words, fallen heroes are not permanently lost in battle and can be revived or recruited after a battle has expired.
Of microtransactions and fallen heroes
The Abbey serves as the focal point of your missions, where you can assemble your teams, equip your heroes, and listen to the dialogue with other characters. The relationship with your heroic companions is also of paramount importance in Marvel's Midnight Suns, as Lilith constantly tries to sow discord among the heroes and draw your allies to her side.
If this undertaking is successful, your heroes will join Lilith's armies in the worst case and appear as fallen heroes on the battlefield, making your life difficult. At the same time, the decisions you make in the dialogue or on the battlefield have an impact on the further course of the action.
As was confirmed shortly after the official announcement of Marvel's Midnight Suns, the strategy title will make use of microtransactions. However, the in-game purchases are purely cosmetic and will have no impact on the gameplay itself.
