In March 2022, Chinese company NetEase acquired 100% of the shares of game developer Quantic Dream for approximately 100 million euros. Prior to this, Quantic Dream had a partnership with Sony, which ended in 2018, leading the company to search for a new partner or buyer since then.
100 million euros set by PACTE law
The purchase price of Quantic Dream of 100 million euros was easily calculable due to the PACTE law, as shares were granted to all employees of the company in 2019. Based on the revealed percentage payments from several sources (50,000-100,000 euros), the sale is estimated to be around 100 million euros.
David Cage, founder and CEO of Quantic Dream, owned 51% of the shares and probably received a payout of around 50 million euros.
Difficulties in developing Star Wars Eclipse
Quantic Dream has been struggling with the development of its Star Wars game Star Wars Eclipse, which has been delayed due to issues with the in-house engine and new hires. The company currently has over 90 positions open for its Paris studio.
NetEase hopes to strengthen its international presence and expand its portfolio of video games with the acquisition of Quantic Dream.
