Overwatch 2 breaks the ice for Blizzard on Steam
Yes, folks, you read that right. Overwatch 2 has a Steam release date and will pave the way for a massive migration of other Blizzard games, maybe even WoW.
I have to admit, I did a double take when I read this: Overwatch 2 is coming to Steam and other Blizzard games will follow suit. With the confirmed Steam release date of the iconic FPS game, the company has confirmed that other games will follow in the footsteps of Overwatch 2. This means that we might finally see games like Diablo and World of Warcraft on Valve's gaming hub.
The Move to Steam
In a press release dated July 18th, Blizzard writes: "As we have evolved, so has the industry - gaming is no longer meant for specific communities as it was when Battle.net launched over two decades ago. Gaming is for everyone - and while we continue to commit to investing in and supporting Battle.net, we want to break down barriers and make it easier for players everywhere to find and enjoy our games. That's why we're trying something new."
It then confirms: "We are excited to announce that we will be bringing a selection of our games to Steam, starting with Overwatch 2." As a free-to-play multiplayer game, Blizzard believes Overwatch is the "perfect" game to kick off the rollout on Steam - especially ahead of the new Invasion PvE missions.
Overwatch 2 Steam Release Date
But of course, you want to know when the Overwatch 2 Steam release date is, and it is set for Thursday, August 10th.
If you decide to get the game on Steam, you will need to link your account with a Battle.net account, which provides access to systems like crossplay. There will also be special Steam achievements to help expand your trophy collection. If all that sounds good to you, you can add the game to your wishlist now.
More Blizzard Games to Follow?
But that's not all - yes, really. In the same press release, Blizzard also writes, "As for what's next for Blizzard on Steam, we'll have more to share about potential other games that could come to the platform when the time is right." So we could see games like World of Warcraft and Diablo 4 on Steam, and that is incredibly exciting.
