Path of Exile 2 and the Beta: COVID-19 Takes Its Toll
The popular and free-to-play action role-playing game from Grinding Gear Games is going into its next round with Path of Exile 2. To leave nothing to chance and to ensure a smooth launch, the responsible developers are relying on a closed beta at first, which was originally supposed to start in early 2020. To the misfortune of the fans, however, nothing came of this. Instead, the start of the beta test was postponed several times in the past months.
However, the delays are by no means due to technical problems or the like. Much more, the developers of Grinding Gear Games had to move to the home office because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to delays in the development of Path of Exile 2. Since the original Path of Exile is also to be supported with fresh content and seasons at the same time, Grinding Gear Games decided not to pull any developers from the first game.
This led to the beta having to be postponed several times in the past. After the planned start at the end of 2020 also did not materialize, the beta is now supposed to start at some point in the calendar year 2021.
Beta more than just a simple marketing tool
What makes things worse is that Grinding Gear Games is not only struggling with the delays caused by Corona. At the same time, the developers point out that the beta for Path of Exile 2 is by no means a demo or a simple marketing tool. Instead, the New Zealand studio wants to use the beta test of Path of Exile 2 to give the community the opportunity to get their hands on selected content or the basic gameplay mechanics themselves. The resulting feedback is then to be used to improve the final version of the action role-playing game.
The scope of the beta cannot be specified by the responsible persons of Grinding Gear Games at this point, as it is only then to be decided which content will be included in the beta when the release approaches. So far, only the basic gameplay mechanics and the basic game structure of Path of Exile 2 are to be put to the test, according to official information.
