Obsidian Entertainment's Dedication to Role-Playing Games
With the Pillars Of Eternity series, American video game developer Obsidian Entertainment has made a big success out of a small Kickstarter project. Inspired by games like Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment, the studio brought back the classic computer role-playing game, and garnished it with innovative gameplay mechanics. The first part Pillars Of Eternity was released in March 2015 for computer systems. The game sold well enough that in August 2017, versions for Playstation 4 and Xbox One were released posthumously.
Pillars of Eternity impressed role-playing fans with a completely self-created fantasy world called Eora and an exciting story with good dialogue and many decision-making options. The combat system is deep and the characters have many abilities. Since these take place in real time, there is a lot of action. On the other hand, this action can also be paused for the selection of strategic tactics and forces. The diverse mix convinced critics and viewers alike.
Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire gets console editions
So it's no wonder that Obsidian Entertainment got the chance to continue the adventure in Eora. Pillars Of Eternity 2 Deadfire was released in May 2018 for Microsoft Windows, Linux and MacOS. The plot picks up directly from the predecessor and starts five years later. Some decisions from the first part can be taken over by importing a savegame. The game has been received just as well by critics on Metacritic with 88 points as the predecessor.
Some reviews even find that with Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire, Obsidian Entertainment has moved further away from the role models such as Baldur's Gate, and in the meantime has been able to put together a huge own adventure with many innovative characters and game concepts. That's why Pillars Of Eternity 2 Deadfire has been available for Playstation 4 and Xbox One in an Ultimate Edition with all additional content since January 2020. A version for Nintendo Switch is also planned for later in 2020.
Fans of role-playing games should remember the name Obsidian Entertainment
The Obsidian Entertainment studio had already shown a decade ago with games like Fallout New Vegas and Alpha Protocol that it is able to present innovative role-playing concepts. But these games were still plagued by technical flaws. Thanks to the success of Pillars of Eternity, budgets have now grown. This is also reflected in their good role-playing games Tyranny and The Outer Worlds.
Therefore, fans of classic Western computer role-playing games will get their money's worth with the Pillars Of Eternity Games. The first part introduces you to the imaginative world of Eora and gives you an old-fashioned but exciting adventure. Pillars of Eternity 2 Deadfire expands the game world even further. In Eora you can experience many new big and small stories and discover secrets.
