Remake or Remaster - What's the difference?

In recent years, there has been a clear trend among video game companies to re-release old video games as remasters or remakes. Often it becomes clear that there is confusion about what a remaster and what a remake actually is. So what's the difference?

What is a remaster?

In a remaster, an old video game is improved technically with modern means, for example the graphics can be upgraded with light effects or adapted to HD standards. These graphical improvements are made within the existing engine of the respective game.

Often the controls are also made fit for use with modern controllers. The content of a game is not affected by changes in a remaster. A good example of this is the Mass Effect Legendary Edition due to be released on May 14, 2021.

What is a remake?

In a remake, that's different. Not only is a game completely redrawn in a new engine here, but game and plot elements often differ from the original. A classic remake is the new version of Resident Evil 2 from 2019.

The developers slightly changed the story and added new gameplay elements, while other parts of the original were left out. Another example is the Final Fantasy VII Remake, which, unlike the original, is completely playable in 3D and contains new side stories for many characters.
