Skull and Bones - Players take control of the entire game world

Pirates have always been a popular theme in entertainment media of all kinds. They also keep popping up in video games, across a variety of genres, from strategy games like Port Royale, to action role-playing games like Risen, to action-adventures like Raven's Cry or survival games like ATLAS. In the online multiplayer gaming sphere, the open-world title Sea of Thieves has established itself in recent years, allowing you to sail your own ship across the world's oceans.

A similar approach is taken by Skull and Bones, a pirate game from Ubisoft that was announced back in 2018. Unlike the comical game world of Sea of Thieves, Skull and Bones opts for a more realistic portrayal. The game is set in the Indian Ocean in the 18th century.

Sea battles in the style of Assassin's Creed

Ubisoft already has a few irons in the fire with Far Cry, The Division or Assassin's Creed, amassing a large fanbase in the process. It was the Assassin's Creed adventures that led the publisher to create a whole new brand. Sea battles have been an integral part of the open-world games since Assassin's Creed 3. Sometimes they are just a side element, as in the latest instalment Assassin's Creed Valhalla, sometimes they are a central game mechanic, as in the popular fourth instalment of the series, Assassin's Creed Black Flag.

It was Black Flag that served as the basis for a standalone game that was all about sailing and fighting on the world's oceans. Skull and Bones was one of the highlights of E3 2017 and was originally supposed to be released the following year. A lot of time has passed since then and the pirate adventure has been postponed several times.

In mid-2020, Ubisoft announced that the game was to be rebooted in order to position itself independently between established brands such as The Division and, of course, Assassin's Creed. According to the latest information, Skull and Bones is due to be released at some point between April 2021 and March 2022, for both PC and consoles.

This is how it is with Skull and Bones

After the restructuring, the pirate adventure is now to appear as a live service game and provide a persistent game world for you. In it you will find quests and NPCs waiting for you, telling a story that is regularly supplemented and influenced by the actions of the players.

Similar to the popular shooter Fortnite, the game world also does not always remain unchanged, but is constantly changing. In addition, teamwork plays a big role in Skull and Bones, so the focus will probably be more on PvE than on PvP.
