Increase in software and hardware sales
The fourth quarter of the year is traditionally a high-revenue period for the gaming industry and Sony also benefited from the typical Christmas purchases. However, the sales surge was also driven by the high demand for the PS5. In total, Sony was able to sell 7.1 million PS5 consoles during the holidays.
In terms of game sales, Sony was able to sell 86.5 million PS4 and PS5 games during the 2022 holidays. The share of physical software sales in Q3 revenue was 7 percent, an increase from the 4 percent in Q3 of the previous year.
Contribution of first-party titles
First-party games such as The Last of Us and God of War Ragnarok have contributed significantly to the strong increase in sales figures. But the popular title Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 also contributed to the high volume of sales.
Sony remains a strong player in the gaming industry and was able to set a new sales record in Q3/22 with the high demand for the PS5 console and successful games.
