Star Citizen - 500 million $ crowdfunding record

A new milestone in the crowd-funding of Star Citizen has been reached. The space simulation by CIG has recently cracked the 500,000,000 $. At the same time, the 4,000,000 player mark was recently reached. On average, the players have spent an incredible $ 120 per head. The last time the 400 million $ mark was reached in November 2021. Within just 10 months, another 100 million $ were collected.

In addition to many enthusiasts, there are also many critical voices. Star Citizen has been in development for 10 years now and a final release is still a long way off.

One of the largest crowdfunding projects

Star Citizen is now one of the largest crowdfunding projects of all time. Among video games, it is definitely the most successful project, by far. In second place is the RPG Shroud of the Avatar with just under 12 million $. In third place is the Asian Shenmue III with "just" 6.3 million $.

Release yes, but when?

As already mentioned, there is still no fixed release date. Not even a date is in sight. This also applies to the singleplayer story mode of Star Citizen called Squadron 42. Originally, this was supposed to be released in 2014. However, the ambitions and claims of CGI and above all Chris Roberts seem to prevent a release. It is speculated that a release of Squadron 42 will take place at some point in 2024 or 2025.
