Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Dagan Gera
"Star Wars Jedi: Survivor" is a big hit among fans, introducing new worlds and characters into the Star Wars saga. However, one of the most interesting new characters is also considered one of the weakest in the sequel. Despite a fascinating concept, the potential of this character was unfortunately never fully realized in the game.
The game takes place five years after "Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order" and continues with a greatly changed Mantis crew. Each of the main characters has evolved between "Fallen Order" and "Survivor," and the game beautifully addresses these changes while introducing new characters.
Lack of Development of Dagan Gera
Unfortunately, not all new characters are treated equally when it comes to character development and sufficient motivation. In fact, one of the most interesting characters in the Star Wars Jedi series is given far too little screen time to make a lasting impression, depriving them of fulfilling character development.
First Impression of Dagan
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor does not provide enough development for Dagan Gera. Dagan had a strong start in "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor," immediately speaking to Cal while bleeding his Kyber crystal. This is the first time this action has been seen outside of the Star Wars comics and provides a fascinating glimpse into the process that all those who succumb to the dark side must go through. It also clearly signals to players, if not Cal himself, that Dagan is beyond reach.
Missed Potential?
Unfortunately, things start to fall a bit flat from there. What should have been a captivating antagonist and a cool insight into the High Republic is wasted in favor of a twist betrayal. This is a great shame because Dagan is one of the most interesting characters in "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor," but he could have been so much more.
Lack of Background Story and Motivation
As a surviving member of the Jedi Order from the High Republic era, Dagan could have provided insights and guidance to Cal instead of Cere. His turn to the dark side could have been delayed a bit longer in favor of better background building, allowing players to get to know Dagan better.
Screen Presence and Motivation of Dagan
However, throughout "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor," players actually learn very little about Dagan, partly due to his limited screen presence. The problem with Dagan's motivation is also that it is weak and relies too much on the player not reading too much into his thin plan.
Conclusion on Dagan Gera
It is truly a shame that Dagan Gera feels like a two-dimensional character. Brilliantly portrayed by Australian actor Cody Fern, Dagan hints at the depth of his character at every opportunity – if only that depth had been truly explored in the game!
