Offworld Industries has announced a new first-person shooter called Starship Troopers: Extermination, based on the cult classic from 1997. The official trailer already gives a glimpse into the game, which takes the player into a world full of infected insects.
Playable Classes and Co-operative Play
The game offers various playable classes, including an assault unit, heavy infantry, and a medic. It won't be easy to overcome the threat of the insect plague, however, as resource scarcity and hostile attacks will present the player with great challenges. Cooperation and strategy are needed to achieve the goal.
Release on Steam
The release of Starship Troopers: Extermination is planned for 2023 on PC. The exact release date has not yet been announced. The game will be available on the online platform Steam.
More about Starship Troopers
All previous Starship Troopers games, including Extermination, are based on the movie and not on the original novel. Since its release in 1959, this has received mixed reviews. While it won the Hugo Award for best novel, it has been criticized by others for its possible fascist tendencies and glorification of war. The 1997 movie, however, uses these themes as a satire of fascism and authoritarian rule.
Offworld Industries and Tencent
Offworld Industries has already been successful with the tactical FPS "Squad". However, fans of the game have expressed concerns that the game is increasingly affected by microtransactions. Tencent, which has already invested in Ubisoft, is also buying up more and more shares in the gaming industry, which many fans view as a greedy attempt at monopolization.
