While the world may not be as obsessed with zombies as it was a few years ago, we can still look forward to action-packed undead battles. Undead Labs is working on a third installment of the State of Decay series, which once again pits a colorful group of survivors against hordes of roaming undead as they try to rebuild in a brutal world. Each previous installment in the series has combined elements of action-adventure, survival horror, stealth, role-playing, and strategy to create an interesting experience.
There aren't many details yet about State of Decay 3, but it's one of the most anticipated upcoming games for Xbox Series X. No release date has been announced for the game yet, and it seems that it will be some time. Currently, the project is still in pre-production and the situation at Undead Labs does not suggest an imminent release. In the meantime, State of Decay 2, first released in 2018, continues to be updated regularly.
What we know so far about State of Decay 3
State of Decay 3 is published by Xbox Game Studios and is therefore available for Xbox Series X, Series S, and PC. The first trailer for the game was released in July 2020 and shows a lone survivor in a cold, hostile environment. Gameplay details are not yet known, but it is expected that the game mechanics will be similar to its predecessors. It is expected that the base-building mechanics will be improved, and more options for customization of weapons, vehicles, and clothing will be offered.
For the first time in the State of Decay series, the game takes place in the wilderness, which means that weather could play a crucial role. State of Decay 3 is being developed with Unreal Engine 5, and there are hints that the game will contain more cinematic cutscenes than the previous installments.
Multiplayer options and DLCs
Similar to State of Decay 2, it is expected that the third installment will offer several multiplayer options. An improvement over the predecessor would be a shared server where friends can build a community together.
There will certainly be some DLCs released for State of Decay 3. It remains to be seen whether these will add new content or continue the storyline like in State of Decay 2.
Our conclusion
Although we don't know much about State of Decay 3 yet, the information and trailer released so far are promising. We are excited to see how Undead Labs will further develop the zombie survival genre and look forward to trying out the improved graphics and new gameplay elements.
