Steam starts in China in open beta

Valve's digital gaming and distribution platform Steam will start in China with immediate effect in the open beta. Chinese players have to create a new and thus a Chinese account after the open beta start of Steam in their country.

However, the game progress and acquired content in games such as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive or Dota 2 will not be lost, as a seamless transition to the Chinese version of Steam will take place. However, there will be significant reductions in the number of games available, as developers and publishers will be subject to the restrictive laws of China in the future.

Since licensing and releasing new games in China takes a lot of time and money, only 40 games will be offered on Steam China at the start of the open beta. Of course, more will be added over time. Community features such as forums have been completely removed, while functions such as the review and news system remain.

At the present time, players in China are not forced to use the Chinese version of Steam and still have access to the international version. However, experts expect that Chinese players will lose access to the international version at the latest with the official start of Steam China.
