Steam Deck - Valve makes the jump into the world of handhelds

After the rumors had already been flying, the responsible people at Valve finally put a stop to it and announced the handheld officially called the Steam Deck. As the name of the system already suggests, we are dealing with a mobile system here, which is supposed to enable you to play your Steam library on the go or mobile.

The Steam Deck will be released in three different versions, which mainly differ from each other in their internal storage space and are offered at prices between 419 and 679 euros. According to Valve, all three versions of the PC gaming handheld have one thing in common: the high-quality workmanship and the powerful hardware for mobile conditions, which, thanks to the Zen 2 CPU and the 16 GB LPDDR5 RAM, will even be able to handle demanding triple-A titles in a corresponding performance.

Powerful hardware on the go

According to its own information, Valve designed a special APU in collaboration with AMD, which was specifically optimized for the Steam Deck. In addition, Valve promises a high-quality 7-inch display for the Steam Deck, which is equipped with a capacitive multitouch display. In the control area, in turn, the PC gaming handheld will be equipped with trackpads for control and a gyroscope, which are supposed to ensure additional precision.

With a view to the battery, it was said in the official announcement that it will last for several hours. With smaller 2D titles or activities such as browsing the Internet, we can expect a running time of seven to eight hours according to Valve. In contrast to Nintendo Switch, the Steam Deck will be delivered without a docking station. If you are interested in a docking station for the Valve handheld, you will have to purchase it separately.

No direct competition to Nintendo Switch

Valve's docking station offers interfaces to external displays, USB peripherals, the power supply or the cable network, among other things. Another point in which the Steam Deck differs from the Switch is the fact that Valve's docking station does not provide an additional power boost. Or, to put it another way: No matter whether you use the Steam Deck mobile or stationary, the performance will not change.
