Steelrising - A crazy king and the French Revolution

The market is currently flooded with Soulslike games, so developers have to come up with something to stand out. Steelrising does just that, thanks to a unique setting in the French Revolution and the key virtues of a Soulslike game. So it's no surprise that there's already a lot of buzz around the title before it's released.

What makes Soulslike games special?

The most important elements of Soulslike games are endurance management, fights against powerful end bosses and a checkpoint system that respawns opponents. This means that the possibilities to individualize the gameplay are very limited. For this reason, the developers have to try to create a unique gaming experience through their game world and story. This ensures that developers try to outdo each other. Better graphics, more spectacular game world or an even more comprehensive and better story.

This is where the French game developer Spiders comes in. Apart from Assassin's Creed Unity, there are probably not many games set in and around the French Revolution. Steelrisings story begins in 1789 during the reign of King Louis 16. However, he has become crazy with power and has an army of automated machines (automatons) under his control. These terrorize the whole of Paris and cause fear and terror among the population. The main protagonist Aegis is a dancing bodyguard automaton who leads the revolution against the crazy king.

The setting of Steelrising

The game world of Steelrising is rather a dystopia of the Paris of that time. The game world is, apart from the opponents and a few corpses, deserted. But that's not unusual for a Soulslike and contributes to the gaming experience.

The combat system of Steelrising

Aegis has different weapons that are integrated into her body. These weapons can be upgraded during the story and thus ensure varied fights. Among other things, there is a metal fan that comes out of her hand and serves as a shield.

In addition to punches, bullets can also be deflected. Aegis's fighting style is strongly influenced by her past as a dancer and is reminiscent of dancing combined with fencing.

The boss battles are characterized by unique bosses. But they differ not only in design, but also in their fighting style. So you always have to adapt the fighting style to the respective boss.

How Steelrising fares against other new titles like Black Myth: Wukong or Lies of P remains to be seen. The official release is on September 8, 2022 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
