The game was released in 2016 under the title Super Tribes. However, in 2019 it had to be renamed due to legal disputes. Until recently, The Battle of Polytopia was only available for Android, iOS and macOS. However, on August 4, 2020, a desktop version was also released, which is available via Steam.
The gameplay in the PC version does not differ from that on mobile devices. Here too, only four of the fifteen available civilizations can be played for free. The remaining eleven have to be purchased via microtransactions.
The rules are incredibly simple for a 4K strategy game, but still offer enough depth so that many different tactics can be used well and sensibly. A good upgrade in the PC version is offered by the possibility to see the whole map at a glance. Because in contrast to mobile devices, the PC can be zoomed out much further. The entertaining games can be further loosened up by numerous Easter eggs available in the game.
