The Callisto Protocol's Story
First of all, something that belongs to the story, to the past. At the beginning of The Callisto Protocol, Krafton was talking about Callisto being set in the same universe as PUBG. Luckily, this dissolved in May of this year and they abandoned the plans. And if we're being honest, a sci-fi space shooter in the same universe as the battle royale hit PUBG? That sounds really far-fetched.
But now to the actual story of The Callisto Protocol. In this one it's about Jacob Lee. He's one of many prisoners in the space prison Black Iron on one of Jupiter's moons. The story begins when a mysterious disease or infection spreads through the prison. It infects the other prisoners and the prison staff and makes them die miserably.
At this moment, only one thing matters to Jacob: getting out of the cell and surviving in this hell. He does everything he has to do to leave Black Iron alive.
The Callisto Protocol Gameplay
As mentioned in an old post of ours, the creator of The Callisto Protocol is one of the Dead Space responsible ones. The similarity is both visually and gameplay-wise not to be denied. As in Dead Space, there is a minimalistic HUD and the few information like hit points and ammunition are displayed on the back of the game character.
The whole atmosphere in the game is also strongly influenced by Dead Space. Although that's of course not quite fair, because that's just how a good space horror game has to look.
The opponents in Callisto are mutated humans, who only vaguely resemble such. There are bulges, blisters and also the limbs are no longer clearly recognizable in shape and length.
Fighting in The Callisto Protocol
In the fight against these monsters, Jacob has several weapons available. But shooting wildly is still not, because there is always a chronic shortage of ammunition. And so there are many situations in which running away is the better and safer option. The prison itself helps, which houses many ventilation shafts and rotating fans.
A tech upgrade called "Grip" was also seen in the trailer. This gives Jacob the ability to lift and spin heavy objects and even opponents. This is very similar to the Zero-Point Energy Field Manipulator from Half-Life.
We are looking forward to The Callisto Protocol and are also curious how it will compare to the Dead Space Remake, which will be released in 2023. The Callisto Protocol will be released on December 2, 2022 and Sci-Fi Horror fans will have a good month to form an opinion until Dead Space is released.
