„The Dark Eye: Book of Heroes“ is based on the Pen&Paper role-playing games „The Dark Eye“. This is a cooperative dungeon crawler in which you lead a group of adventurers through the world of Aventuria, specifically through numerous dungeons. The focus is on multiplayer. Four heroes set out together to solve different tasks. The game is developed by Random Potion.
The game system is based on the DSA rulebook. Those familiar with role-playing will quickly find their way around. "Book of Heroes" wants to imitate cozy role-playing rounds in the living room with its multiplayer. Friends meet online, create their heroes and jointly complete their own stories. The single-player campaign is less in the foreground.
First, each player creates his character. The player has four standard races to choose from: humans, dwarves, half-elves and elves. You can choose from four classes: warrior, thief, mage, consecrated. For each of these, there are three subclasses. In addition, each player chooses an ideal for his character.
The shared campaign starts in the tavern "Schwarzer Keiler". Here the characters meet, level up, get the necessary weapons and armor and choose the story missions. The players should write their own stories. In the first place, it is about fighting through different dungeons and looting properly. The areas are procedurally generated, so they offer a certain degree of chance. If you don't have any human companions, you can fill the group with four characters controlled by AI heroes.
As in a real role-playing round, "Book of Heroes" has a narrator. This leads the adventurers through the story. The game offers a Discord connection to facilitate communication with the group.
The dungeon crawler is played from an isometric perspective. The fights take place in real time and are reminiscent of games like Diablo. However, each blow and each counterblow is rolled according to the DSA rulebook. The focus is always on exploring the dungeons together and fighting the many opponents. At the end of each adventure, the players receive AP (Adventure Points), with which they can upgrade their heroes.
Small Developer with Ambitious Project
"The Dark Eye: Book of Heroes" was announced at the Black Eye House Fair "Ratcon" in August 2019. Initially, it was to be released in the first quarter of 2020. Later, the release date was postponed to the second quarter of 2020. The developer Random Potion is from Finland, the publisher is the German-based Wild River Games.
The game "The Dark Eye: Book of Heroes" is primarily intended to please fans of the role-playing games of "The Black Eye", the D20 dice and pen & paper role-players.
