The Era of Battle Royale Games - What does the future of the genre look like?

With the release of PUBG, then-Bluehole Studio led by Brendan Greene ushered in a new era in shooter genre. While there were games decades earlier where dozens of players battle it out in epic battles, inspired by the Japanese film Battle Royale, PUBG set two central new priorities. So in Battle Royale, it is essentially about surviving as the last one out of 100 players. In addition, the genre emphasizes the survival aspect on the often huge game maps, which are searched for equipment, weapons and vehicles.

Nothing has changed in this basic formula since 2017. Although numerous other and often successful games of the genre have been released since then, such as Fortnite, Apex Legends, Call of Duty Warzone and Ring of Elysium, many fans of the game principle have also turned their backs on the genre and criticized the lack of innovation and new releases. But the era of Battle Royale Games is far from over.

These developments are invigorating the genre

A look at the mother of all Battle Royale games, PUBG, often did not bode well in the past. So the number of players has been constantly declining in recent years and matches have been filled with bots, which should ensure full servers. But the result was above all frustration among the players, because the bots were not even labeled as such. Fortunately, the player problem is likely to be resolved at least for the foreseeable future on 12.01.2022. So from then on, the title will no longer cost around 30 euros, but will be available free of charge to all players. As a free-to-play game, many newcomers will also come into contact with the genre for the first time and be enthusiastic about it.

In addition, the large development studios have not given up the format by a long shot. For example, Activision released Call of Duty: Warzone in 2020 and EA's Apex Legends continues to receive regular updates and content. In addition, a number of titles are due for release in 2022 that could revitalize the genre and bring their own ideas to the table. In this context, for example, the video game The Cycle: Frontier is to be mentioned, whose release is to take place this year according to the developer Yager. Here you go on exploration
