Daedalic Entertainment on Paid DLCs
The German developer Daedalic Entertainment recently explained why its upcoming game "The Lord of the Rings: Gollum", set to be released on May 25th, will offer paid DLCs that add more Elvish content. As part of the pre-order campaign, Daedalic is offering the "Precious" special edition, which includes four extras that players of the standard edition can purchase as DLCs.
Sindarin Language Expansion and Other Extras
One of these extras is a language expansion for the Elvish language Sindarin. This allows the Elves to speak more in their native language as players wander through the different regions of Middle-earth. It turns out that all players will hear some Sindarin, but this expansion adds more of it. Daedalic emphasizes the effort put into adding a fictional language in spoken and written form: they hired professional voice actors and had experts in Sindarin train them.
Why paid DLCs?
The studio says that the price of the DLCs reflects the effort it took to add Elvish as a spoken language. "The elves in the base game will occasionally speak in their language (Sindarin)," Daedalic said in a statement to Eurogamer. The Sindarin language expansion adds additional Sindarin lines for some background characters. The DLC is aimed at true Tolkien fans who want to delve even deeper into the world of Middle-earth.
The "Precious" Edition and its contents
In addition to the Sindarin language pack, the "Precious" Edition includes three other DLCs: a collection of concept art, a "lore compendium," and a soundtrack. It is slightly more expensive than the standard edition, but Daedalic emphasizes that they are not trying to overcharge for it.
