Daedalic Entertainment is developing a new fantasy adventure for consoles and PC with The Lord of the Rings Gollum. Even before the release, the upcoming work of the Hamburg studio caused a lot of talk.
Graphics of the fantasy spectacle already outdated before the release?
Unfortunately, not only in a positive sense. Instead, Daedalic Entertainment had to endure the accusation after the release of the first screenshots that the graphics of The Lord of the Rings Gollum were already outdated before the release. If you ignore the fact that Gollum's adventure is still in development and will be further optimized graphically, the aforementioned impressions caused heated discussions in international gaming forums, especially because of the rather cartoon-like graphic style.
However, it must be mentioned here that it was never to be expected that The Lord of the Rings Gollum would be able to withstand a comparison with the expensive triple-A productions of leading publishers such as Electronic Arts or Ubisoft in terms of graphics. After all, Daedalic Entertainment is a relatively small studio with 80 employees. In addition, the workforce is spread over several projects that are currently being worked on in Hamburg.
In order to use the limited resources strategically or to invest in their own projects, the developers of Daedalic Entertainment have repeatedly relied on cartoon-like graphic styles in the past and used the available resources to realize interesting concepts and exciting stories.
A similar project is likely to be pursued with The Lord of the Rings Gollum. As the name suggests, the next title in The Lord of the Rings universe focuses on the mysterious Smeagol alias Gollum or his sad fate. Due to his physical properties, Gollum is of course not able to physically withstand the orcs and other minions of Sauron who make Middle-earth unsafe. Therefore, a large part of the gameplay focuses on stealth mechanics and a quiet approach.
At the same time, the creative minds at Daedalic Entertainment want to shed light on Gollum's inner conflict, from which his mind is literally torn apart, and thus allow players an alternative view of Gollum and The Lord of the Rings universe as a whole.
