The Waylanders - A classic fantasy RPG becomes a Kickstarter success

In 2018, independent developers Gato Studios announced The Waylanders, a role-playing game inspired by classic genre representatives such as Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, or Dragon Age. After a rather bumpy start to development, The Waylanders was awarded as one of the ten best indie titles at Gamescom 2018.

To finance the final phase of development, the Gato Studios team launched a Kickstarter campaign that quickly turned into a success. Within a very short time, the targeted 150,000 US dollars were collected and the first stretch goals were quickly reached. These include, among other things, that the final version of The Waylanders will be completely translated into German.

A detour into the world of Celtic mythology

But what does The Waylanders offer gameplay-wise or in terms of available content? The story of the classic fantasy role-playing game is based on a world inspired by Celtic mythology, whose inhabitants are not only plagued by a magical corruption. In addition, a merciless war is raging for the throne and thus for the rule over the world of The Waylanders.

In terms of gameplay, the new title of Gato Studios, as mentioned at the beginning, is based on classic representatives of the role-playing genre and will give you the opportunity to create your own hero and develop it individually. At the beginning, your hero is based on one of six different main classes.

Strategic battles and changing perspectives

In the course of the adventure, you can subject your hero to powerful specializations and draw on 30 more classes. The battles of The Waylanders quickly lean on their Penants from Dragon Age: Origins. Because even if the battles take place in real time, you always have the option to pause the fighting and take the time you need to plan your next steps meticulously.

The Waylanders is played in a classic isometric perspective. But if you want, you can switch to a third-person perspective at any time to explore hidden corners of the game world, for example. Depending on the approach, the Kampage from The Waylanders should occupy you for 40 to 60 hours.
