The Witcher 4: The Next Step in the Witcher Universe
Friends, buckle up! "The Witcher 4" is in the works at CD Projekt Red. The Polish developer, responsible for both the massive fantasy RPG series and the recently revived Cyberpunk 2077, has big plans: both a sequel to Cyberpunk and a completely new Witcher saga are in the pipeline.
The game director of the new saga, Sebastian Kalemba, spoke about what to expect in "The Witcher 4" during Milan Games Week 2023, and it has a lot to do with the approach of Cyberpunk 2077. Kalemba emphasizes that their brand is player freedom, but always within limits. An example of this is in Cyberpunk 2077, where players can choose the background of their character, whether they want to be a man or a woman, but they are always V. There is always something that has already been written in advance, and we have to create a path for the player to follow.
Pushing Boundaries with The Witcher 4
With over 300 developers working on the next game in the series and a projected release date of mid-2024, production is in full swing. CDPR is even using Unreal Engine 5 instead of REDengine for "The Witcher 4", and the team believes it will help them push boundaries.
Kalemba continues in the interview, "This predefinition puts you in very specific situations because all of our characters and video games have stories, and they fit very well with what we decide at the beginning. But the player also needs to have the ability to have freedom, to feel free, starting with character creation: our focal point is immersion, it's about being able to choose your own path."
The Structure of The Witcher 4
"The Witcher" will follow this structure: a lot of freedom, but there is a specific path to follow from a storytelling perspective. Kalemba also mentions balancing long-time and newer fans of the series with the next trilogy, starting with "The Witcher 4", codenamed Polaris. He even talks about how the newer games want to appeal to those who enjoy Geralt's adventures.
Who Will Be the Protagonist in The Witcher 4?
It is still unclear whether we will play as Geralt, Ciri, or an entirely new character. But we do know that "The Witcher 4" takes place in the same universe. Therefore, Geralt will likely exist in the universe at least while we play, which means we could see him.
