Them's Fightin' Herds - Indie-Fighter impresses with comprehensive fighting mechanics

Humble Games released Them's Fightin' Herds, an indie fighting game, in early May 2020. The game's appealing graphics and diverse game modes impressed many video game fans. In the action-based game, you control one of the many cute horse- and unicorn-like characters, with which you compete against friends or online players in one of the versatile fighting arenas.

Them's Fightin' Herds is especially appealing to fans of other tactical fighting games, including big names like "Super Smash Bros." and "Brawlhalla." But the game's cute, child-friendly graphics also expand the target audience to include younger video game fans, as there are no traces of blood or realistic violence despite the action.

What makes the game special is its simple but effective gameplay mechanics: with the four different attack buttons, you can develop great combos that will force your opponents to their knees. In addition, there is a special attack that is stronger than the normal attacks, but must be charged beforehand.

Not only the attack variants, but also the specially developed "Juggle Decay" prevents a combo interruption and thus allows you to develop uniquely long attack combinations, which sets the game apart from "Super Smash Bros." and other competitors.

In addition to the detailed combat mechanics, Them's Fightin' Herds can also score points in other areas. The droll 2D graphics in a cartoonish style and the varied selection of game modes give the indie game an adventurous gaming experience.

After you have familiarized yourself with the basics of the game in the tutorial and training mode, you can compete against your friends and other users from all over the world either locally or online. The GGPO netcode system ensures few to no delays in the versus game, so you can enjoy your fighting experience to the fullest.

But the standard fights are not the only option to have fun in Them's Fightin' Herds game. The Pixel Lobby mode with the Salt Mines also offers numerous ways to have fun with friends in the pixelated world. Here you have the opportunity to either fight off the predator waves together or to fight each other in a competitive mode.
What is extraordinary in the nostalgic pixel lobby is that you slip permanently into the role of your individually designed character. You get clothes, accessories and decorations from almost all fights, so that your creativity for the look of your animal is unlimited.

That Humble Games has done a lot right with their indie fighter is also shown by the numerous user reviews on Steam: Over 92% of the just under 1,300 reviews are very positive, especially the simple but convincing 4-button attack mechanism pleases the players.

This is also why the development studio is already in full swing to develop new content for Them's Fightin' Herds. A story mode is to be added in the next update, in which you are supposed to follow the trail of a magical key that saves the world of Foenum from malicious predators.

Overall, Them's Fightin' Herds thus represents a serious indie fighter, which can be understood as an alternative to the well-known "Brawlhalla" and "Super Smahs Bros.". In particular, the simple combat mechanics, the unique "Juggle Decay", the versatile game modes and the fluid online gameplay are convincing all round and provide long-term enormous fun.
