TT Games - Loss of several projects, including LEGO Disney

TT Games, the developer behind the popular LEGO video game series, has reportedly cancelled multiple projects that were all based on high-profile licenses. Among them was a LEGO Disney title that was allegedly close to completion. Another project based on Guardians of the Galaxy was also cancelled after 18 months in development. In this article, we summarize the key details for you.

Project Marley: A LEGO Game with Disney Characters

Internally known as 'Project Marley', this LEGO game was supposed to feature various Disney characters such as Maleficent, Pirates of the Caribbean, Toy Story, Frozen, and Winnie the Pooh. Players would have been able to explore a large open world and had to navigate through dungeons similar to Diablo. The overarching goal would have been to free each world from a malevolent purple force that corrupts the environment. However, the development team had difficulties with the direction of the game and ultimately cancelled it after at least four years of development.

Project Cosmic: A LEGO Game with Guardians of the Galaxy

Another project that was reportedly cancelled according to internal sources was 'Project Cosmic'. This was a LEGO game based on the Guardians of the Galaxy license, and was even supposed to include Marvel characters Nova and Adam Warlock. The development lasted for 18 months before the project was cancelled.

Project Rainbow Road: A Shooter Adaptation of Warner Bros. Property

'Project Rainbow Road' has also been cancelled by TT Games. Originally started as a Funko project at TT Games, the license was later passed on to developer 10:10. However, TT Games attempted to salvage the project by developing different ideas for their own mascot character designs to incorporate the WB properties. The project included properties such as DC, Rick & Morty, Looney Tunes, and Netflix's Stranger Things.

Project Lego X: A Mobile Adaptation of Lego Worlds

'Project Lego X' was originally in development at Playdemic but was later transferred to TT Games after Playdemic was acquired by EA. However, the project was also cancelled.

Most of these projects were developed using the Unreal Engine and not TT Games' internal NTT Engine, which has notoriously caused difficulties for developers. Another new game featuring Batman or a DLC for Lego Skywalker Saga, based on the popular series The Mandalorian, are also in stagnation as resources are being poured into a longer-awaited new game in the series, the Harry Potter Lego Saga.

It seems that TT Games is facing similar difficulties to those once faced by Telltale Games when it came to executing a successful formula that encompasses license rights from multiple IP holders and simultaneously completing multiple projects.

However, it should be noted that other developers have recently acquired the LEGO license. Both BrickTales and Builder's Journey have released games based on the license, and VGC reported last year that 2K has acquired the license for sports games.
