Ubisoft buys Kolibri Games - Ubisoft enters new segments

Ubisoft is usually known for developing big blockbuster games for PCs and consoles. But lately there has been a diversification in the French video game developer's program. It seems that Ubisoft wants to move into new segments. This probably includes the free mobile games segment for smartphones.

Ubisoft takes over Kolibri Games

Because after Ubisoft took over the French developer studio Green Panda Games in July 2019, which is known for its free mobile games, the video game giant took the next step in January 2020. As was announced in February 2020, Ubisoft takes over 75% of the shares of the German indie studio Kolibri Games.

Kolibri Games became internationally known with the free mobile game Idle Miner Tycoon. Since its release in 2016, the game has been downloaded more than 100 million times. Idle games are games that are operated with simple button presses. In addition, the core mechanisms, in this case the collection of resources, partly take place without the involvement of the player. This makes idle games extremely accessible and can be played in the background with the simplest means. That is why Ubisoft is interested in increasing its share of the growing market for free mobile games.

With the success of Idle Miner Tycoon, Kolibri Games was one of the highlights among German video game studios. In general, German companies are not having a breakthrough success. Only a small percentage of video game sales are generated in Germany by German video game companies. Therefore, the success of Kolibri Games, which can record an annual turnover of more than 36 million euros, is all the more remarkable.

Ubisoft expands in Germany

With the acquisition of Kolibri Games, Ubisoft will become, measured by the number of employees, the second largest video game company in Germany after Nintendo. Ubisoft is also expanding its locations. There are now Ubisoft Studios in Mainz, Düsseldorf and Berlin. In some cases, smaller studios were completely taken over and then renamed.

Ubisoft also has the option of increasing its ownership of shares to 100% in the next few years. It is not yet clear when or if this will happen. But sooner or later, a complete takeover and renaming could also take place at Kolibri Games.
